Erasmus Maris Week
Our school team of 7 students from different language sections and accompanying 2 teachers participated in the Erasmus Maris Week initiative from the 9th to the 13th of September in Buriana, Spain. This immersive educational experience focused on scientific research themes related to monitoring microplastic pollution and preserving the marine and aquatic environments. The course involved various activities such as nautical team building exercises among students coming from 10 other European schools in Europe, sampling campaigns onboard sailboats, analysis of environmental samples, and workshops.
Before taking part in this event, our school team worked for two months in weekly meetings and lab workshops concentrated on monitoring microplastic pollution in our nearby environment Bois de la Cambre with our school science teachers. During the Erasmus Maris Week, our students had a chance to share their experiences, insights, and challenges, creating a dynamic community of learners.
All activities were supervised by 15 professionals including scientists in marine field research, and seasoned experts, ensuring a safe and enriching experience. At the end of the course, all participants received valuable certificates stating acquired knowledge and lab skills in marine research approved by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. In the following year, our team will continue working on and invite new students interested in the critical issue of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments.
