S5L2EN Enrichment Debate in SPV
EEB1 organized a school event where students could watch an ongoing debate between two groups of three selected from different S5L2EN English enrichment classes. Smaller debates occurred earlier, discussing the subject of UBI (universal basic income). The winning classes’ students had a final debate that took place in the salle polyvalente on May 13th, 2024. The debates were organized by enrichment teachers (Ms. Bacha, Ms. Ayers, and Mr. Halazs) and the pedagogical referent (Ms. Rangelova).
We recently interviewed the team of the proposition for the final debate, which was about the complete ban of phones in school. We asked the participants several questions. They explained to us how they seemingly had less time to prepare compared to the other group. They had to come up with their speech on the spot. One of the participants fully agreed with the points he was stating. Speech came more naturally to him. However, his teammate had mixed feelings about his performance, hesitating once due to his uncertainty on the subject. Both of them did a great job regardless of their opinion on the subject. They both enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to next year’s competition, even though the opposition team won.
There are still aspects of the debate that can be improved in the future, such as choosing a better subject that’s easier to discuss and come up with arguments for. The problem with this year’s theme was that both teams had similar arguments, and therefore, there was no real conclusion.
We are looking forward to future debates that will allow us to gain a better understanding of people with different views on the world.
