After the storm comes the sun with the 2021 MUNUCCLE
It has been a rather intense year with quarantine, online meetings, lack of social interaction…However, this has not affected the MUNUCCLE to join once again despite these conditions. The Media MUNUCCLE team in the European School of Brussels I have interviewed delegates and new students joining the organization to give the world an insight on the organization and inspirations for this year´s event.
From experienced students to new participants, a common element has been mentioned various times: This year´s event will be like no other due to its powerful topic. In recent years the issue of “Covid-19” has changed our way of living. Essentially, the topic of this year´s event is based on “Built a more inclusive and resilient post-Covid world”. The 9 committees are then defined with “a part of the cake”: the Security Council, for instance, will focus on the question of new geopolitics after the pandemic. Cristina Jiménez (s7ESB), one of the presidents of the COP (the pandemic concerning climate change), mentioned: “Climate change is very important, and having the chance to take part of the COP committee was one of my inspirations to join the MUNUCCLE this year”.
A Munuccle under Covid
Despite the difficulties that aroused last year due to the pandemic, new participants have been more motivated than ever to join the event. “New incomers” have set their special interest in wanting to get an insight of how the UN works and to broaden each one´s horizon and comfort zone. In an interview, Alice-Daria (s6Fr) mentioned: “It´s my first time joining the MUNUCCLE (…) In my case, I decided to participate in the event to improve my capacity to talk in front of other people and to learn how to debate, how to prepare arguments efficiently”.
We are just a week from the event, students are preparing for the challenge and organizing their ideas. The responsible students for each one of the 9 committees have divided each task fairly so every participant (new or experienced) has a say at the conference. An aspect that has clearly been beneficial for both, students, and organizers, is the fact that meetings started a week earlier. Ms. Thomas (one of the teachers organizing the event) commented: “This year seems to be a lot easier in terms of organization (…) The virtual meetings have been replaced by school meetings. Students meet once a week to discuss the topic they have been assigned. We also kept the good ideas from last year and decided again to start with meetings a week earlier this year. It´s just a lot easier like this”.
The pandemic has clearly changed all of us, in one way or another. However, this does not mean that it must change our traditions and our life. This year´s MUNUCCLE is special in its own way. Students gather, once again, to discuss and learn about the world they are living in: Because after the storm, comes the sun and with it, the 2021 MUNUCCLE.
