Alice in Borderland: a deadly game
“Alice in Borderland” is a Japanese horror/action series. It displays a dystopian version of Tokyo where each of the main characters’ decisions could mean life or death. The original idea came from a 2010 manga, and in 2020 was made into a show which contains two seasons, with a third season in production right now! The characters must navigate through the terrain of survival while forming alliances, confronting inner demons and most importantly not losing their sanity in the process.
The show is about an addicted gamer, Arisu, who suddenly ends up in an empty version of Tokyo with two of his friends, hiding from the police. They are forced to compete in deadly games, the type and difficulty of which is represented by playing cards in order to extend their “visa” or rather, how long they have left to live. As they navigate this landscape, they encounter other survivors, form groups and confront their biggest fears. With each new game come new challenges, pushing the characters to their limits both physically and emotionally, while trying to find a way home.
Overall “Alice in Borderland” is a fantastic psychological series that will make you want to know all the secrets it contains. The characters are improved compared to the original manga, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, which makes them more relatable. The cinematography is sophisticated, making people believe that the series was filmed in the middle of actual Tokyo. The show keeps viewers on the edge of their seat with its unpredictable plot twists and heart-stopping moments!
