ESSS 2022: 4 days in Strasbourg

The annual European Schools Science Symposium unites students from all the European schools to participate in a huge international science fair. In a nutshell, each school can send up to 4 teams to present scientific projects in the ESSS each year. The project entries are wide-ranging, from applications in computer science, robotics, to classic scientific investigations, and sociology type surveys.

This year’s event hosted by the European School in Strasbourg featured students optimizing decryption methods and exposing weaknesses in cybersecurity, investigating electromagnetic induction as an efficient means of power, simulating a crossroads with python to minimize the fuel consumption of cars, and many more examples of innovative work.

Les 4 jours passés à Strasbourg ont été une expérience très agréable. L’école européenne de Strasbourg nous est montrée très accueillante. L’ambiance entre les participants était chaleureuse, et nous avons pu faire connaissance avec de nombreux participants venant de nombreuses écoles européennes. Des activités telles que le bowling ont été organisées, ce qui nous a permis de rencontrer des personnes avec lesquelles nous n’aurions surement pas eu de contact autrement. Enfin, nous avons pu assister à plusieurs buffets et repas magnifiques.

We are very proud to have represented EEBI in the final of ESSS2022 and to have placed 3rd overall. Marin and I developed an online tool (RoomSafe) which evaluates the risk of COVID-19 at events and offers users advice tailored to the specific parameters of their event and the profile of invited guests.

 Dans l’ensemble, ce voyage était une expérience unique, et nous souhaitons que chaque personne ayant un esprit scientifique de l’école européenne puisse un jour en faire partie. Nous remercions particulièrement tous les professeurs qui ont rendu cette expérience possible, et espérons que cela permettra aux élèves des futurs ESSS de découvrir de nouveaux horizons.

If you are interested in taking part in the contest, you are in luck! Our school has one of the most democratic selection processes. The science festival is open to all secondary students and prepares students for the kind of scientific work presenting skills that the ESSS demands. The summer is a great time to brainstorm ideas and to come up with a project to present at our local science festival, and perhaps at the ESSS2023!
